When making a DOS boot disk, it would be best if after booting into DOS with it, you could directly use the corresponding WIN command to start Windows 3.x and Windows 9x. That would greatly promote the integration and interoperability of DOS and Windows. On the contrary, most existing DOS boot disks, including the DOS boot disk made by Win98 and so on, cannot do this. I'd like to make a suggestion to wengier: because the ms71 boot disk has powerful features and lots of software, it looks a bit cluttered. It would be better to sort them into categories, package them separately, and call them separately. That would look clearer.

For example, wengier's disk uses multi-level menus, so software used at different levels can be made into archives, then extracted and called separately. That could also save a bit of space.

But most of the programs called from the menus are about the same, and almost all the software has already been compressed with UPX and so on, so extracting and calling them from ZIP, CAB, etc. wouldn't really save much space either.

Then how should they be stored? If already compressed files are compressed again, the more you compress them, the bigger they get. It might as well just be fine to put them into folders by category.

Wengier, I downloaded the MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk you made a few months ago. Can it directly use the "Win" command to start Win 9X on drive C:?

I tried it. This MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk can start Windows 2.x, 3.x, 98, Windows for WorkGroups 3.x, and so on, no matter which folder on the hard disk they are in. But it cannot start Windows ME, NT, 2K, XP, etc.
