How to install Windows 1.0
Steps:
1. First install MS-DOS 6.22. But Windows 1.0 cannot be installed on DOS 6.22; you need to change the DOS version to 1.0.
2. Use two small programs (Vers and DOSVer) that provide version-changing capability. At the DOS prompt, enter
"VERS 2.0" and that will do it.
3. Run this small program before installing Windows 1.0, and it can then be installed normally.

I installed it under ms-dos 3.3 before, and it succeeded right away.

I remember installing windows 1.0 under dos 6.22 too, and it seemed to work. It was still the black-and-white interface.

Yes, this was copied from the Internet and I modified it a bit, because the original said to change DOS version 3.0 to 1.0. But very few people have such an early version, right? Besides, I tried 1.0 and it didn't work, so I changed it.
I used DOS7.1 before, then changed it to 1.0 with Vers, and the system then said version 2.0 or above was required. So 3.3 should definitely work!
But after trying again later, version 6. 22 also worked. Sometimes things are just inexplicable!

Below is the original text from the Internet:
How to install Windows 1.0

2. There is a small program that provides version-changing capability. It's actually just a short piece of ASM; I can't find the code right away. Get this
code or program (I searched a bit, and there are two tools: Vers and DOSVer that can change the DOS version number). Enter
"VERS 1.1" and that will do it.
3. Run this small program before installing Windows 1.0, and it can then be installed normally.

This version of windows is too simple, so there really isn't much to play with.

Definitely not many people could successfully try DOS1.0!

After Windows 1.0x is installed under PC-DOS 3.3 in a virtual machine, if you copy it to a real hard disk, then by creating a PIF and using DOSVER, it can even be started directly under Win98 (untested on WinXP). But the mouse problem is very hard to solve. Even with the 1.04 PS/2 mouse driver, it only recognizes PS/2 mice on original IBM machines (including the ThinkPad little red nub).

After you installed it, did you get the startup screen? Or was it garbled?

I don't know how to install ones below DOS5.0; they seem to all become boot disks and not get installed on the hard disk

My PIF only specifies the DOSVER 3 3 win.com command line and path, and also blocks a few Windows hotkeys (Alt+Enter, Alt+Tab, Alt+Space), because on my machine Win1.01 doesn't recognize the mouse, so I can only operate it with the keyboard. Nothing else was changed. Win1.01 was installed with the EGA driver.

bochs seems to be able to emulate a serial mouse. I tried it and found that the mouse still could not be used under windows 1.04.

Here's something interesting,

winxp can still run programs for windows 1 and windows 2

You already told me about this a few months ago.
I reverse-engineered, modified, and Chinese-localized Reversi under Windows 2.1/286 myself.
