What conditions are required for the use of smartdrv.exe?
I'm preparing to install the system under DOS and deleted all files on the C: drive. As a result, when running smartdrv.exe, it said it couldn't be used. Oh no! Now I can only enter DOS. What exactly else is needed to run it? EMM? CONFIG? Or.... |

smartdrv must have extended memory (XMS) to use disk caching, that is, there must be an extended memory manager. Generally speaking, you can load himem.sys in the config.sys file.

In Config.sys, there should be at least one line: device=himem.sys

It seems that I didn't have it in my memory. I remember when I installed Win2k, it took more than 3 hours just to copy the files (I don't know if it was a dream).
Also, it seems that if the hard disk cluster uses 512 bits, loading smartdrv will have the same effect as when it is not loaded. |

That is, it must be config.sys and himem.sys, and add a line "device=himem.sys" in Config.sys to be able to run.

The difference in time consumption during the copying phase is extremely large between installing with running SMARTDRV first and installing without running SMARTDRV first, unless using mirroring methods like GHOST or other direct disk hardware DMA methods! There is evidence from my personal experience (installing the system/DELTREE large directory system)!

When installing Windows XP, if you don't load smartdrv, heh heh, it might take three times as long! After loading, it can be installed quickly.
The landlord's problem might be that the smartdrv file has been deleted. If possible, copy one over. If not, just don't load it. It's just that it will take a bit more time. |
