HX Extender is a very powerful and practical tool. It can run many 32-bit Windows (that is, Win32) command-line software under pure DOS, supports many Win32 functions, and even supports some DirectX and OpenGL functions. It is a perfect replacement for previous software such as WinEM. After testing, many command-line software under Win9x/NT can run normally and is very easy to use. Of course, there are also many that cannot run currently.
Its usage method is very simple: after decompressing, first make sure that the BIN path in the PATH environment variable contains it (can be placed in AUTOEXEC.BAT), and enter HXLDR32, so that various Win32 command-line tools can be run directly like in the DOS window, for example, CABARC (a tool for making/managing CAB files, which of course supports long file names), 7Z (that is, 7-Zip, a relatively new compression tool, supports multiple compression formats), etc., which is very convenient. In addition to this function, there are many other practical functions inside, for example, HDPMI32 can be used to replace CWSDPMI, etc. Everyone can also conduct research and testing. More importantly, this software has been continuously developed, and the functions are getting stronger and stronger. This is the latest version 1.41 just launched earlier this year (that is, these days), and it supports long file names. Here, I recommend everyone to test or use it. Specifically, what commands are available? Give examples to listen to.

If you cooperate with other software to establish a network environment under DOS, can you use MiniQQ under DOS? This is one of my dreams!

Regarding the Win32 command-line tools that can be run with it, let me give some examples. For instance, command-line compression software includes CABARC, 7Zip, Win32 InfoZIP, Win32 RAR, UHARC, PNGOUT, etc. It can even run some non-command-line Win32 software, such as DOSBox.
Currently, it is completely possible to establish a network environment with it (for example, when the DOS network card Packet driver is installed, you can use Win32 WGET to download files!). MiniQQ is not supported at present, but this software has been updated recently (the latest version was released just 5 days ago), so it may be achievable in the near future. |

I've long been thinking if there's an environment where DOS simulates Win32API/ABI. It's a great thing. I've been looking for it for a long time. Up!

HDPMI32 seems to be better than CWSDPMI.
There is still a considerable gap between DOS32A and DOS4G. |

Originally posted by darkradx at 2006-4-30 04:50 PM: Yeah, HDPMI32 has more functions than CWSDPMI (for example, it supports LFN API translation, and has better compatibility with my SB PCI/Live! sound card), but there are currently some bugs (especially when running DOS protected mode programs, it sometimes crashes). I hope the author can fix them as soon as possible. The latest version 9.1.2 of DOS32A was just released a few days ago. |
