I'm a newbie who just started learning LINUX. After I finished installing RedHat LINUX and rebooted, this message appeared on the screen: "Missing operating system!" This hard drive originally had DOS installed, and later I wanted to replace it with LINUX. After installing it, that line of message actually appeared. I don't know why. Can anyone tell me? Thanks!!

Where did you install your LILO or GRUB?

After booting with a boot disk, is all the original data on the hard drive still there? It wasn't damaged?

Yeah, after I boot with a floppy disk, the data on the hard drive is indeed all there. But once I boot from the hard drive, this error message appears: "Missing operating system!" I don't know why??

As I remember, LINUX mainly boots in 3 ways. LILO/GRUB in the MBR, or in the first boot sector of a hard disk partition (NT uses this method). Another is booting from a floppy disk. I don't know which method you chose at the time. I don't know whether LINUX changed the MBR or what, causing the system not to boot. To restore the system on drive C, SYS C：should do it. If that still doesn't work, then FDISK/MBR. That should be no problem. But then there'd be no way to boot LINUX. If you didn't make a boot disk either, when I ran into this before, I could only reinstall LINUX. Although it's pretty dumb, that's as far as my ability goes at the moment.

Don't you only need to install LILO/GRUB when dual boot is needed?? My hard drive only has LINUX installed, I don't need dual boot, so I didn't install LILO/GRUB. Could this be the reason why my system can't boot??

Then try installing LILO or GRUB to make a DOS and Linux dual boot setup.
