If we want DOS to develop better, become more powerful and practical, and gain wider use, we should have a DOS development plan, for example, how to develop DOS to get the best results, etc. DOS stands for freedom, openness, and development, so developing DOS can also greatly promote the development of open source code and the GNU GPL free world, especially our country's own operating systems! Everyone is welcome to offer more suggestions, to develop the DOS we all love together. Thank you!

First, we need to solve the DOS memory limitation problem in the true sense.

I think the most urgent task is to give DOS large character set support. Windows has already entered the GB18030 era (I think that's how it's written, can't remember clearly), while DOS is still stuck at the GB code stage and can't even support GBK. Really painful!

That makes sense. I've probably felt this GBK issue very deeply lately. When I use the Lynx browser to browse this forum on my own computer, I can only see the GB Simplified Chinese parts in posts by Roy and Dark-destroy; I can't read the Traditional Chinese part that comes with GBK. So I can only occasionally go to another computer and enter Win98 to read those GBK and Unicode parts (because using that computer is nowhere near as free as using this one).

I think that besides character encoding, DOS's user interface also needs improvement

Directly support the CPU's protected mode; after that, everything else will be easy to talk about.
I think OS/2 should be the model.
The CPU has already reached the Hyper-Threading P4 era, and the P5 "Itanium" is also about to arrive. If we can't fully bring out the CPU's powerful capabilities, everything is in vain.
DOS isn't lacking in excellent GUI programs; Win98, which everyone has been using all along, is the best example. SEAL2 is also pretty good. So I don't think GUI is the top priority.

Right, GUI is very important! Protected mode isn't that difficult either, just use DPMI or something like it. FreeDOS 32 is even a pure 32-bit DOS operating system.

I think so too. If you develop a GUI, then it won't be called DOS anymore, and it would also lose DOS's original characteristics
