I have an old NEC laptop (PIII 500/128M RAM 10G HD), and there is only an external CD-ROM (connected via a PCMI card). Since the computer is infected with a virus, I want to format the entire hard drive and reinstall the system. But after setting it to boot from the CD-ROM, it turned out to be useless. Later, I found that the so-called CD-ROM couldn't be used without booting into Windows. Looking at the BIOS, it didn't seem to support USB device boot. I wanted to take out the hard drive and install it, but the hard drive of that laptop is extremely difficult to remove. The computer is now running Windows ME system, but it's full of viruses, and it's slow, of course, and completely unusable.各位高手,请问有何办法让我能把它格了再重装系统?如蒙赐教,不胜感激.

(Note: The second part "各位高手,请问有何办法让我能把它格了再重装系统?如蒙赐教,不胜感激." is also translated as "Dear experts, may I ask what methods there are for me to format it and reinstall the system? If you can give me advice, I will be very grateful." But since the first part is already translated, and according to the requirements, just provide the translated text, so the entire content after translation is as above.)

Is there an installation program on the hard drive?

If not, there's nothing we can do with a single computer.

You need at least a disk that can boot into DOS.

There is no need to format the entire hard drive and reinstall the system. As long as you can enter the system, you can perform a clean installation!

The owner's computer is indeed infected with a virus.

Yeah, it's really troublesome because there are viruses that can't be completely eliminated. There are installation programs in the hard drive, but if you just install like this, the viruses will still be there, right?

Oh, it's no use if DOS can't be booted. Do you see if there's still a place to connect a hard drive on the notebook? The problem was solved by using the hard drive cloning method.

If I can't enter DOS, I can't find a solution.

LZ, you'd better honestly borrow a floppy drive.

Wow! I have the same problem too. Dude, if you have a way to solve it, please let me know. It seems that disassembling the hard drive is the only way?

A fresh installation will prevent the virus from acting up! When performing a fresh installation, all system files will be automatically deleted! Upgrading installation won't work!

LZ: Let's see if there's still a place to connect a hard drive on the notebook. Solved the problem by means of hard drive cloning. Otherwise, borrow a floppy drive to test, and the last resort is to remove the hard drive.

Seeing so many enthusiastic friends giving suggestions, I'm really grateful. Under all kinds of helplessness, I had to take the hard drive out. But a new problem came up again. I copied i386 to the hard drive and formatted the C drive with boot files, but it still couldn't boot when connected (it was okay on my other IBM notebook). So I had to put it back and install 98 again, thinking it could be fixed, but it still couldn't boot on that NEC. Then I tried installing XP, and it still couldn't boot, now it reports a ntldr error. I wonder what good ideas you all have? Why is it okay on the IBM computer, but when the hard drive is changed to the NEC, it can't boot?
