First, thank you everyone~~~
I have a NEC PC9821 machine, which is a local Japanese machine. The PC-9821 series computers are personal computers launched by Japan's NEC Corporation (Nippon Electric Corporation). They are different from the hardware structures of the IBM compatible computers and MAC machines we usually use, and the operating systems are also different. They are products localized in Japan. Among the low-priced models in the second-hand notebook computer market, a considerable number of computers belong to the PC98 models, with a main frequency of 120-200. If there is the word "PC98" on the machine, you should be careful. This kind of computer can only install the Japanese version of Windows 95/98, and its boot disk is also dedicated. Once its boot system is damaged and you don't have a backup boot floppy disk, it is very likely to become a "naked machine". Many buyers of second-hand computers are not prepared mentally. As soon as the computer is in hand, they want to install the Chinese operating system, often making such a fatal mistake: the English DOS system disk cannot boot at all, and the hard disk cannot boot after being made into a system on other computers. Why can the Japanese 98 be installed directly? Because Windows 95/98 is a 32-bit operating system, English DOS is 16-bit, and the NEC PC9821 uses 12-bit DOS. The Japanese 98 is completely compatible with it, so the boot disk it makes can boot the system, while our 98 can only make a 16-bit DOS boot disk, so it cannot boot the system, let alone install it. For specific introduction: http://www.pc84.com/weixu/NEC%20PC9821.htm. (Scroll down after seeing the webpage) The first question comes: ) Is there really a 12-bit DOS? So I got a boot disk from the Internet: http://www.necpc9821.com/anzhuang.htm After getting it done, it can boot the PC9821 notebook. At the same time, I downloaded the Japanese DOS that can be used on the machine: http://www.lm8.org/SoftView/SoftView_376.html The second question comes @_@ Experts, please download this boot disk and the Japanese DOS, can you analyze and confirm if this is a 12-bit DOS? The third question ^_^ If it is a 12-bit one, do we have a 12-bit DOS (English or Chinese) If not, can we localize the Japanese DOS into Chinese or English ---------- Edited by willsort ---------- Modified original title: Questions that even DOS experts may not know the answers to (please click on the moderator and all DOS experts) ---------- Edited by willsort ---------- [ Last edited by willsort on 2005-10-7 at 17:15 ] |

The files seem to have no difference from the PWIN98SE files, just that they are all in Japanese.
No matter what kind of floppy disk it is, it uses the FAT12 format. The key is what format the hard disk is in. The following is copied from WIKI in English, so unfortunately, PC98 requires a specially designed operating system or a modified operating system. It can be imagined that as long as it involves hardware, changes are needed. For example, hardware drivers and so on. Don't buy products that have taken a non-standardized path. PC98 is a name for computers based on the NEC PC 9800. In the early 90s 50% of the PCs sold in Japan were PC98 and it is still fairly widespread today. The PC98 is different to the IBM PC in many ways, it uses its own 16 bit C-Bus instead of the ISA bus, BIOS, I/O port addressing, memory management and graphics output are also different. I have a 98 machine. It's installed with the original Japanese version of Win98 4.10.2222. Everything works without problems. Programs with text interfaces like PKZIP and RAR in DOS work without problems. But as soon as BIOS interrupts are used, they can't be used universally. And many old Japanese games can be played in pure DOS.
PS: Most 2HD floppy disks of PC-98xx are 1024 bytes per cluster, totaling 1232KB, while those of IBM PC are generally 512 bytes per cluster, totaling 1200 or 1440KB. [ Last edited by yksoft1 on 2006-1-28 at 15:48 ] |

There is no mention of 12-bit machines here. The PC98 is different from the IBM PC in many ways. It uses its own 16-bit C-Bus instead of the ISA bus. BIOS, I/O port addressing, memory management and graphics output are also different. In this way, MS software needs to be made into special low-level driver programs completely according to the requirements of the PC98, and even the core of the operating system needs to be modified, otherwise it cannot support this kind of machine. The difference between the PC98 and the ordinary PC is similar to the difference between a PDA and a PC, or between a Macintosh and a PC. It is almost impossible to replace it with a common operating system, such as 98, 2000, XP, unless MS declares that an operating system supports the PC98. To use Chinese, it can only be localized on the basis of the original operating system. |

It's not almost zero, but just zero.
The later models of 98xx (after CanBe) have PCI. The difference between 98 and PCAT is not that big. The instruction sets are all i8086/i386. |
