My hard drive is completely dead, and I won't be able to buy one for another two months.
I've got a broadband port and want to get online.

I still haven't used a CD edition of Win98 up to now. To use it to boot Win98 and get online, you'd need to install the network card driver and do a whole series of network configuration steps (set IP, subnet mask, DNS, gateway, etc.), and to make these settings take effect, you must reboot the computer. Since CDs are read-only and cannot be written to, none of the settings can be saved. If you want a CD with a configuration and network settings already set up to fully match your computer, then it would have to be made by hand.

I previously used Win98 running on a virtual hard disk. Although the system settings could be saved, the system was very unstable, and after rebooting all settings would disappear automatically.
