Win98 SE trimmed down to 40MB by a 67-year-old foreign enthusiast

A few days ago, a 67-year-old foreign computer enthusiast claimed that he had successfully reduced the huge Windows 9X operating system to 40MB. This is not compression—it really takes up only 40MB of hard disk space. After compression, Windows 9X can boot successfully within a few seconds.

It is said that this old gentleman even boldly released a free CD and user manual so that more people could try out his work. He posted all the information on the “PC Advisor Forum.” Everyone can register on the forum and view the related materials. The reduced system has only 1,339 system and application files in total. Microsoft's 98SE, on the other hand, has 9,318 files. He stated that the reduced system he made uses the Microsoft Windows 98SE kernel 100%; the reduced system merely keeps the core of the Windows system and leaves out many unnecessary files. He said that only Microsoft Windows 98SE can be modified like this; LINUX cannot.

It always feels a bit dubious to me, and if there really is such a 98lite, it could only run on specific computers and wouldn't be universal.
