MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS are both binary files. If I open them with the EDIT command, I just get garbled text. Now I want to view and modify these two files—how should I handle it?

Use DISKEDIT, Softscape PCTOOLS, or WINHEX in WINDOWS; they can also edit 16-bit files.

In higher versions of DOS, such as MS-DOS 7.x, MSDOS.SYS is a text file, so you can view it directly with the EDIT, TYPE, or MORE command.
