Memory Type Total = Used + Free
---------------- ------- ------- ------- Conventional 640K 50K 590K Upper 19K 5K 14K Reserved 384K 384K 0K Extended (XMS)* 15,341K 493K 14,848K ---------------- ------- ------- ------- Total memory 16,384K 932K 15,452K Total under 1 MB 659K 55K 604K Total Expanded (EMS) 15,680 (16,056,320 bytes Free Expanded (EMS)* 15,088 (15,450,112 bytes * EMM386 is using XMS memory to simulate EMS memory as needed. Free EMS memory may change as free XMS memory changes. Largest executable program size 590K (604,192 bytes) Largest free upper memory block 11K (11,328 bytes) MS-DOS is resident in the high memory area. What settings do I need? |

You're using EMS (expanded memory), and it needs to use 64K in the reserved area for mapping. That by itself reduces UMB by 64K. Also, some other expansion cards may be occupying reserved memory. It's best to check it with DOS's MSD.

After I boot with my MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk (choose the second option, the UMBPCI method), I have 630K conventional memory free and a bit over 70K of UMB free:
