t I’ve worked for quite a few companies, both domestic and foreign. Whether it was a foreign company or a domestic one, I always heard people around me say: work is too intense, there’s simply no time to study; I can’t learn anything from this company; after a while I need to find a company willing to train me, even if the salary is a bit lower, that doesn’t matter, as long as I can learn something real. Is that really the case? Not necessarily. Actually, they just don’t know how to learn.
Learning is a dynamic process. The environment of society is different from that of school, so the way of learning is naturally different too. The school method does not work in society. But many students who have just moved from school into society do not realize this, and keep complaining that the company has not given them good training, and at every turn bring up a few famous companies as examples. Learning in school is a continuous and concentrated process, a pure learning stage, but society is not like that. In society, you are required to put in labor in exchange for wages. If you want to earn more wages, the only way is to find your own way to learn. As for how to learn, that really needs careful thought.
Generally speaking, there are three kinds of learning in society. Below we will list them one by one and analyze them.

The first kind: going home and reading, learning through reading on your own or through further study.
Reading at home is a very important way of learning. Once a person enters society, in work he will definitely run into all sorts of problems, and these are things not learned in college. Because one’s position in society is relatively fixed, the professional knowledge required needs to be deeper, and requires serious study by the person in the post. Move from the practical side of work to the theoretical side in books, then from the theoretical side in books back to the practical side of work, combining the two so that each is cause and effect of the other. Only this kind of comparative learning can truly let a person reach real depth in his position.
Further study means continuing to improve yourself in theory. In work, you naturally accumulate some practical experience, and you will definitely come to some realizations. University education is far from enough; the level of university education is all on the surface. If you want to grasp the inner layer of theory, continuing your studies should be considered a shortcut. After improving in theory, it in turn will also promote practical work. This kind of interactive cycle is what a working person needs.

The second kind: a way of learning by practicing, discussing, and exploring while working.
It should be said that this way is extremely important for improving oneself in the workplace. In society, whether you are willing or unwilling, active or inactive, everyone consciously or unconsciously takes part in all kinds of interactive organizations. Some of these organizations are structural, such as departments, companies, and other real social organizations. There are also non-structural mutual-aid organizations, such as QC circles, study interest groups, and other non-administrative mutual-aid organizations. No matter what kind of organizational structure it is, inside there is always a process of practice, discussion, and exploration.
In some overseas companies with relatively rigorous organizational structures, the learning interaction among members is indeed very effective and active. In this respect, domestic companies have done very, very little compared with some overseas companies. A comparison of engineers from overseas companies and domestic companies with the same years of work experience shows this quite clearly.

The third kind: learning from a master.
Whether you are willing to admit it or not, people who have been through ups and downs in society for a long time all tacitly accept this reality: if a student who has just started working has an excellent master to guide him, then the practical ability he can reach in a year and a half is almost no different from that of a student who has explored on his own for 10 years. The gap here is quite frightening.
But unfortunately, many students who come out of the ivory tower set their sights too high from the very beginning, thinking they can do anything, unwilling and even disdaining to ask others for advice. Often it is only after suffering losses in society for several years that they realize this problem.
Last year I was recruiting a product R&D technician in one company to be my assistant. What was very surprising was that among the candidates applying for that position, 6 people were already over 32 years old, and nearly 20 were over 28. Of course, I could not accept these 26 candidates; they no longer had any value for cultivation.
Learning from a master also cannot be equated with the old view in society that one trick can feed you everywhere. Yes, if considered from the angle of making a living, I think there is nothing wrong with that saying at all. But if viewed from the current trend of social development, then this concept is greatly mistaken. Take myself as an example: I personally recognize 7 masters from whom I seriously sought guidance. Aside from finance, for every kind of elite expert in the positions that a company ought to have, I sought them all out as masters. Of course, it’s impossible to find all such elite experts in one company. This requires you to keep searching.
I’ve rambled on for quite a while, so I won’t keep going. Consider this an introduction to some experience for students struggling in the workplace.

The designer of Windows NT/2000/XP only jumped to Microsoft after 17 years of work, and by then he was at least 35
(even if he graduated with a bachelor's degree at 18 and started working then), he was still doing R&D work, and doing core coding work at that.
In China, if you can't do R&D work at 32, isn't that a bit too exaggerated; I guess they weren't recruiting R&D staff, but someone to do miscellaneous chores, and for miscellaneous chores of course the younger the better.
