Don't modify AUTOEXEC.BAT, modify MSDOS.SYS instead: under , change BootGUI=1 to BootGUI=0.

That won't do. What I want is this: disable F8 during Win98 startup, then set a password in autoexec.bat. If the password is entered, it can stop Win98 startup and enter DOS; if not entered, it goes into Windows. How do I do that? When autoexec.bat is running, pressing ctrl+C or ctrl+break still can't stop Windows from starting.

If you want to disable the F8 key, you'll still have to modify MSDOS.SYS: add a line, BootKey=0. As for setting a password, look through the recent posts, lots of people have been discussing it.

I know how to set a password
What I mainly want is to stop Windows startup That is, when Windows startup reaches autoexec.bat have something run in autoexec.bat that can interrupt Windows startup and enter the DOS prompt |

If you want to disable the F8 key, you'll still have to modify MSDOS.SYS: add a line BootKey=0. Let autoexec.bat run win to re-enter Windows—you can set a password, and only run win if it's correct.

You still haven't understood what I mean. The key point is that I want to stop Windows startup from autoexec. During the Win98 startup process, after autoexec runs, it automatically runs win.com to start Windows. What I want now is for win.com not to run after autoexec finishes.

Actually, if you add BOOTGUI=0 to MSDOS.SYS, then after AUTOEXEC.BAT finishes it won't run WIN.

Looks like I'll have to use the method from the previous post: set BOOTGUI=0, then in autoexec.bat, if the preset key isn't pressed, run win automatically to start Windows; if it is pressed, prompt for a password.
