You can load SBINIT first, then load XMSDSK!

My sound card is an SB PCI 128, and I also use the SBINIT.COM driver program. Load it first, then use XMSDSK, and then when entering <>, there will be sound.

After using XMSDSK to create a virtual hard disk, did you put the Legend of Sword and Fairy game directory on that hard disk?

No need to do that. The reason for using XMSDSK is only to occupy XMS memory so that The Legend of Sword and Fairy can run.
