Recently I installed Win2k and MS-DOS 7.1 on a P166 machine, but for some reason, most programs under DOS have this problem "cpu error: incorrect opcode. killing process." Under Win2k, there is "... an error occurred and will be closed by Windows, requiring a restart."

I took that hard drive to a PII 400 and it also had errors.

What is the reason for this and what should I do?

Also, I would like to ask how to adjust the large memory consumption, for example, to leave 32M out of 256M. It seems that RAMDrive can only use up to 32M at most.

The following is a quote from renhq2002's post on January 5, 2005 at 11:33:51:

Why consume so much memory? I don't know what the building owner's purpose is?
ramdrive.sys can only use 32M, while the xmsdsk.exe of the MSDOS 7.1 boot disk can be used up to 1G.

That's because some old games can't run under large memory. Thanks for your xmsdsk.exe!!! Who can tell me what that cpu error is about? Hope friends who know can help and give some ideas!

CPU error indicates an error during program execution. There are two possibilities: one is that the program itself is faulty and errors occur as soon as it runs; the other is that there is an issue with your DOS system configuration. You can check the situation of system configuration files such as CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. For example, some programs are incompatible with EMM386, etc. If that's the case, you can change the configuration.

Oh, so that means it's not really a problem with the CPU. I once used PQ to convert from an extended partition to a primary partition, but at the beginning there were no problems. It was just that suddenly the hard drive couldn't boot. Then I replaced it with a notebook hard drive and copied the program over, and then most programs had that killed error. Thanks!
