Making a Super Boot Disk for PC Maintenance

Making a Super Boot Disk for PC Maintenance

For everyday PC maintenance, a boot floppy that can start your computer normally under various operating environments is essential.
This means that even if your hard disk crashes, your machine can still boot from the floppy drive and you can use various methods to restore your system. Since the two most popular operating systems right now are Windows95 OSR2 (that is, Windows97) and MS-DOS 6.22, this requires
your boot disk to have system files that can support both FAT16 and FAT32 partition tables at the same time, and to support CD-ROM startup drivers so the CD-ROM drive can be used.

Now let me first introduce the process of making a dual-boot DOS6.22 and WIN97 boot disk.

  1. Make a WIN97 boot disk. This can be generated during WIN95(7) installation, or by choosing to create a boot disk from the "Add/Remove Programs" option in the "Control Panel".
You can also directly use the WIN97 boot disk that comes with a brand-name machine (such as a Lenovo computer) (this also lets you use the universal CD-ROM driver it includes). The author used this as the basis.

  2. Copy the IO.SYS file again under the new name Winboot.sys. First use the ATTRIB -H -R -S command to remove the hidden, read-only, and system attributes from IO.
SYS so it can be copied, then copy it. (If you want to make a WIN98/WIN95 dual-boot disk, you can skip this step.)

  3. Overwrite the floppy's MSDOS.SYS file with the one from the hard disk and make the corresponding changes, (the hard disk boots with WIN97)
this depends on personal preference; the author's changes are as follows:

It's nowhere near as good as the MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk I made. My boot disk has FAT32, large hard disk, long filename, NTFS, USB, mouse, CD-ROM, large memory, and all those other functions.

Yeah, this boot disk really isn't as good as the ones we make ourselves, but I also started making boot disks from DOS dual boot.

I remember there was a guy who wanted to burn a four-floppy boot disk set onto one CD. I wonder whether he solved it or not.

I have a CD that can boot four ways: 98, ME, 2000PRO, and a system partition backup tool, among others. After making a selection, it can enter the system boot menu, where you can choose to install an operating system or select other menus. Hidden in its root directory are 4 disk image files, but I don't know how the four-way boot was made.

4-way boot is nothing special. The bootable CD format has no limit on the number of boot images.
Making a bootable CD with 1.2,1.44,2.88.HD coexisting, or even more images coexisting, is completely feasible.

You can achieve multi-boot just by using Win2K's boot menu. MS-DOS 7.10 also supports dual boot.

Hehe, Wengier advertises his boot disk everywhere he goes.

Really? I only promote it a bit on the forum, that's all.

To tell the truth, your boot disk really is very good, it's just that using Wubi under dos feels a bit troublesome. :)

Thanks. But because of floppy disk space limitations, there's no way to add a Chinese character support system. Even the Tianhui Chinese character support system takes over 200K.

I'm also looking for a Chinese input system that's as small as possible. They're all around 500K.

Although the Pocket Dragon Chinese character support system is small (just over 50K), it's not very practical.
