Today I used the DOS 7.1 boot disk IMG file downloaded from here and made a DOS 7.1 boot disk. After it was made, though, it couldn't boot into DOS, and only stayed on the "loading config............" screen, then went no further. Later I cleared the contents of config.ysy and autoexec.exe. Then it was able to boot into DOS. After running ver, I found that the version was 4.10 instead of 7.10. Was the IMG file here made wrong? Or what is the reason?
I ask the experts for advice; I would be extremely grateful! Many thanks! |

The IMG image file itself would not be wrong, but judging from the symptom of crashing after displaying "Loading CONFIG", I'm afraid there may be a problem with the computer's memory, because it crashes while loading HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. The reason it can boot after clearing CONFIG.SYS is that after clearing it, loading of the HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE files is skipped, but obviously doing this will reduce system performance.

But I have always been using this computer, and the operating system is windons xp. I have never noticed any memory problems. And the Win98 boot disk can also boot the computer.
I also don't know why it is like this??? |

I tried that boot disk again. Later, in config.sys, I removed the noems option from device=a:\emm386.exe noems, and then it booted successfully. Please tell me, what does noems mean in that line?
Also, when using the ver command, why does it show windows 98 ? Why not version 7.10? |

The display is wrong. Please use the latest MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk I mentioned above, then there will be no problem. Also: this problem was caused by Microsoft. NOEMS means EMS memory is not enabled.

Many thanks, webmaster.
I have one more small request: I also want to know the meanings of some command parameters in config.sys. Do you have materials on this? For example: emm386.exe noems novcpi i=b600-b7ff command.com /p /e:640 |

The meaning of EMM386's NOEMS parameter is that it does not provide EMS memory, in order to save some UMB (upper) memory; the meaning of the NOVCPI parameter is that it does not provide VCPI (Virtual Control Program Interface) memory; I=b600-b7ff means using the memory between b600 and b7ff as UMB memory.
COMMAND's /P parameter means permanent-resident mode; /E:640 means the total size of environment variables is 640 bytes. |
