When I use QuickView Pro 2.46 to play MP3s under DOS, it always says "no sound card". My sound card is an es1868. But DSS can play them. Do any experts have a solution?

QuickView Pro is a bit stricter than DSS about the BLASTER environment variable settings, so please check whether the BLASTER value is correct.

What is the BLASTER environment variable, and how do I set it? Please advise.

The BLASTER environment variable is a general sound card variable under DOS. It provides various DOS programs that use sound cards with the sound card configuration. You can find details in the "Using DOS" section. For example: SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6, etc.

On another machine, after installing the DOS driver for its cmi 8738 sound card (integrated on the motherboard) and using qv, it says "no sound card found". Even after changing the BLASTER variable according to that "Using DOS" article, it still says "no sound card found".

You must set the interrupt correctly. You can try FreeCDP; it can automatically detect the sound card (first remove the BLASTER value), then write down the sound card settings and reset the BLASTER value.

Do you mean use freecdp to detect the sound card? I just tried it, and there were some prompts, but I couldn't understand them. I don't know whether that was the interrupt.

Then can FreeCDP play MP3, MID, and other music?

Then please look at the sound card interrupt and other information shown by DSS, and set it in the BLASTER variable.

DSS can't play on this machine either, but there is sound when playing The Legend of Sword and Fairy.

That would be MIDI sound, right! You might as well try FreeCDP.
