Does the DOS 6.22 we use now (that is, pure DOS) mean PC-DOS? Some brand-name machines came with DOS 7.0 floppy disk software—what DOS system is that? Is it an upgraded version of DOS 6.22? Please help explain it, experts. Thanks!

The DOS made by IBM is called PC-DOS. When people generally say DOS (if not specifically indicated), they usually mean the MS-DOS made by Microsoft. The last commercial DOS released by Microsoft was MS-DOS 6.22. Versions after 6.22 were all made to serve 9X; they were not standalone DOS. Microsoft has already abandoned development and upgrades for DOS and 95.

PC-DOS 7.0 is an upgraded version of PC-DOS 6.3, and MS-DOS 7.0 is an upgraded version of MS-DOS 6.22.
