Experts in computing: My laptop is an ultra-thin model, and the CD-ROM and floppy drive are external USB devices. A few days ago I formatted the hard disk, then booted with a Windows 98 system disk. I can get into DOS, but I just can't find the CD-ROM, so I can't install the system. Right now it can recognize the floppy drive, but it just can't detect the external CD-ROM drive. It's really driving me crazy, so I'm asking all you experts to give me some advice. How can I get it to recognize the external CD-ROM drive? It's best if you can be a bit detailed, because my skills are not very good. I would be extremely grateful.

To make DOS recognize a USB CD-ROM drive, you have to install a USB driver for DOS. USB_CD, Motto Hairu, DUSE, USB4DOS, and so on should all work.

I don't know whether your laptop can boot from a USB CD-ROM drive. If it can, then everything will be easy. If it really won't work, find an adapter, put the hard disk into a desktop machine, partition it and copy the files over, then put it back into the laptop and install. Although DUSE and the like can support USB CD-ROM drives and hard disks under DOS, not many people have used them, so it's hard to help you.
