Doesn't the WinXP command line basically handle most DOS functions? Then what's the difference between it and DOS?

The "Command Prompt" in WinXP is only WinXP's command-line mode. It really has nothing to do with DOS, and instead has many new features specific to WinNT/2K/XP. But it also provides a DOS virtual machine (NTVDM), which can run some DOS programs.

The DOS we discuss here is an independent operating system, while the cmd in WinXP and Win2000 cannot run apart from the Windows operating system environment.
