May I ask neiljoy, what virtual machine are you using? I'm using VMware 5.52, but there's no USB boot-related content in the boot options, and I can't boot from the USB drive in the virtual machine.

grub --config-file="find --set-root /menu.lst configfile /menu.lst”

Can avoid skipping access to the floppy drive (fd0)
