When using EXTRACT to unpack files, sometimes weird problems like “ERROR: Out of memory while processing cabinet file ebd.cab “ will appear for no apparent reason. What about ACE? Would it be a bit more stable than CAB?

I agree with lydong's view,
I've also run into the same thing as lydong.

I just tried using four programs, PKZIP 2.50, RAR 3.20, CABARC, and ACE 1.2b, to make archives in ZIP, RAR, CAB, and ACE formats respectively, to compress the registered DAO 3.9D (31 files total). The results are as follows:

DAO.ZIP using ZIP format: size 1,496,773 bytes
DAO.RAR using RAR format: size 1,494,267 bytes
DAO.ACE using ACE format: size 992,686 bytes
DAO.CAB using CAB format with standard compression: size 1,492,308 bytes
DAO.CAB using CAB format with LZX:21 maximum compression: size 933,105 bytes!

You can all see it now, right..

That depends on what kind of files they are!
Comparing just one type of file is very unfair!
winrar and winace both have solid mode and multimedia compression,
when there are lots of small files,
or when compressing WAV files and BMP images,
winrar and winace are way ahead,
if you don't believe it, try it yourself.
Also, moderator, remember to tick solid mode in winrar.
And set the dictionary size to 4MB too!
Otherwise it's really unfair!

I didn't use WinRAR! As I said above, I used RAR 3.20 for DOS to compress the RAR file.

The following is quoted from what yiyesong posted on 2003-7-2 18:30:12:
CABMANAGER has a compression option under the toolbar options, where you can adjust the compression ratio (1—21). If you choose maximum compression, I believe very few compression tools can beat it. Its default is minimum compression, so friends unfamiliar with this software generally can't feel how powerful its compression capability is.
It has many functions: it can set passwords, create self-extracting programs, and so on.

CAB MANAGER seems to be able to compress only files, not directory structures.
I found a compression program much better than it, Mimarsinan ComprexII. It can compress and extract a huge number
of formats, and its compression ratio is extremely high, the highest I've seen. It can also compress directory structures into CAB format.
The best thing about CompreX is that it integrates with Explorer. After installation, viewing the contents of compressed files is just like viewing folder contents. I feel that with it, other compression software can all retire.

The results I got using cab manager and compreXII to compress a folder were:
Before compression: 2,033,809 bytes
After compression: cab manager: 1,157,398
Mimarsinan CompreXII: 1,149,114

Click the Reply Post button above and you'll get the upload file option!
The quick reply below can't upload files!
If you really can't upload it, just give a link, that's fine too!

Under DOS, I personally think imp1.01>ace2.02, and as for speed, if it's ain then it's so fast it feels like copying, while for safety it's rar2.5

Under Windows, I personally think imp>winace>cab> but the most universal are winrar and winzip
