Hehe.... viafmtsr.com is only suitable for use on VIA southbridge chip models VT82C686x or VIA AC97 sound chips. Your machine is a 486, so of course it doesn't have this chip. On laptops the sound card chip is directly built onto the motherboard, but I don't know which model it is. But I believe it must be ISA BUS, and without PnP. For this type of sound card, if the BIOS can detect it, it can definitely make sound. As for the emulator having no sound, I think it should be an IRQ problem. Try specifying I/O, IRQ, DMA parameters to the emulator before playing it. I am not too clear on Nesticle's method for specifying them; search online for related articles..

Moderator, I found VIAUDIO.COM, DOS4GW.EXE and VIAFMTSR.COM from the CD that came with the machine, and modified the AUTOEXEC.BAT file as follows:

Also, in my BIOS, under "CMOS Setup Utility"--"Integrated Peripherals" -- "On Chip Device Function", there is no "On Chip Sound" --"Sound Blaster" Function, only "AC97 Sound Device". The available choices are “Auto”, “Enable”, “Disable”, and I chose “Enable” here.
