Let me make my question a bit clearer. For example, suppose I install win98 on drive c:, then copy the c:\windows directory to drive d:, and then format drive c:. At this point, if I boot with a dos7.1 boot disk, then enter d:\windows and run the win command, will it start win98 ?

If that works, then I wouldn't need to install 98 every time. I'd only need to back up a windows folder.

The Windows registry stores a lot of information about the path where Windows is located, so you can't move it like that. Windows is not "green software"!
