Of course it can partition automatically. Just now I created an unpartitioned hard disk in VMWare 4.0, and after using it (the installer) to partition automatically and then install DOS, everything worked normally.

But this boot disk doesn't support automatically created partitions very well -- after it automatically partitions the disk and installation is finished, the hard disk can boot, but when booting with the ISO, it says: hard disk not found!
Somehow somewhere I've got to choose.
No matter if it is win or lose.

What exactly is the “hard disk not found” message? I tried several times too, and didn't find this problem!

It's this:
Setup is now checking partitions on your hard drives.
Sometimes it says Done, and sometimes it says something about the hard drive not being ready...
After exiting the installer, I found that drive C was actually the CD-ROM...
But booting from the hard disk is completely normal, and after booting once from the hard disk, the problem never appeared again.
Somehow somewhere I've got to choose.
No matter if it is win or lose.

I just tried the same method several times in VMWare, but I really could not reproduce this “problem.” I suspect it is a BUG in *some versions* of VMWare itself, or a problem with related settings. Could that be it?

That isn't a problem with PDOS alone, but a compatibility problem between it and EMM386.. Just don't load EMM386 in CONFIG.SYS (and doesn't the MS-DOS 7.10 installer let you automatically choose whether to load EMM386 when it runs?)..
