I think a large part of the reason why all the experts in the DOS Union are so devoted to DOS and work so hard is that MS-DOS is not our own, and Windows 9x~Windows XP~Windows 2003 are not our own either...
Obviously, at the current stage, our country's technical level is still several years behind that of foreign countries... For example, right now we might be able to make a DOS system stronger and easier to use than Microsoft's, but they've already moved on to 2003. There is no denying that the Windows series really is easier to use than DOS systems, at least for now on a worldwide scale. Abroad there may also be Unix, Linux, and more besides, while domestically the Microsoft banner is the one flying bright red... Many times the function of a boot disk is only to repair things after Windows crashes, or to install the system before anything has been installed at all... Wengier is a very strong expert, but even on his machine he still has to install Windows or Linux...
This is the DOS Union Forum, so naturally everyone's main topics are DOS-related. But in fact, the kernel of the Windows operating system was extended from DOS to begin with, so why can't we have a work that can replace Windows? Even though that is an extremely vast undertaking...
Maybe, as Wengier, Roy, Master Rushi, and Electric Guitar Invasion have said on the forum, we can expand on the basis of DOS, make it stronger and easier to use, slowly add a graphical interface, multithreading support, multifunctional network applications... and personally I also don't think it necessarily has to be installed on a floppy. However large WinImage can emulate, emulate that much, then burn it onto a CD, and I think its range of application would be even broader! Once it can replace other operating systems, then it can be installed on a hard drive and drive Microsoft out of the computer, making a real DOS (Disk Operating System)!!
Of course, DOS still cannot compete with Windows right now, but personally I think the DOS Union should pool everyone's wisdom, think about DOS applications in different situations such as network admins, system maintenance personnel, home use, etc., and release corresponding DOS systems, so that DOS systems can go one step further in these areas.
I only discovered the DOS Union in the past few days. In fact, I myself am just an extremely green newbie, maybe not even a newbie, maybe just a leaf. After coming here, I found experts everywhere. I greatly admire people like Rushi, Wengier, Roy, and others too (there are others as well, I just can't think of them all at the moment, sorry). Today I happened to see the OP bring up this topic, and these shallow views in my heart just came spilling out. I only hope everyone can discuss with each other; I mean absolutely no disrespect!
