In the toolbar options of CAB MANAGER there is a compression option where you can adjust the compression ratio (1—21). If you choose maximum compression, I believe very few compression tools can beat it. Its default is minimum compression, so people who aren't familiar with this software generally won't notice how powerful its compression ability is.
It has many functions: it can set passwords, create self-extracting programs, and so on.

It's still better to use CABARC.EXE, it's only one file! With its -m option you can set the compression ratio, and the maximum is 21. At that point its compression ratio is definitely a bit higher than ACE's.

I'd like to ask admin Wengier, does CABARC.EXE run under DOS? I haven't used the command-line method before. Could you give an example of extracting files with it? Also, can CABARC.EXE extract multiple files at once?

CABARC of course supports extracting and creating multiple files at the same time! Just look at its help for the details.

Cabinet Manager 2003 is slow as hell on my machine. At the default compression ratio it's at least 10 times slower than WinRAR (no exaggeration at all). This algorithm sacrifices way too much time, doesn't it?

The compression time is indeed a bit long. I'm using the highest compression ratio, 21. But you have to know, it's hard to have both spear and shield; personally, I think as long as it can shrink the data to the smallest size possible, sacrificing some time is still acceptable!

Really? Why don't I feel that way? A 3M file takes only two seconds on my machine (maximum compression). I don't feel WINRAR is any faster than it.

That's how it is. I also just installed Cabinet Manager 2003 and started using it. Compressing ordinary files is still acceptable, but for some files with special structure it's hard to say. For example, that IP data file wry.dll in 追捕 (a little over 3M): using the default compression level 17, it took at least 10 times as long as WinRAR, and the size was only 9k smaller than WinRAR. If I used the maximum compression ratio 21... my AthlonXP1600+ was running at full speed, nothing else could be done, and I still didn't have the patience to wait for it to finish. I don't know whether it's a problem with its algorithm. If you don't believe it, go find a wry.dll and try it? I've uploaded the wry.dll I used.

Neither Cabinet Manager nor Cabarc supports compressing subdirectories?

It only compressed the files in the current directory, and ignored all the subfolders......

CABARC supports subfolders! Try its -p and -r options.

Wengier, tell me how to use CABARC. Give me an extraction example, okay? I've never used CABARC, and in a DOS window I can't open its help information either. /h, /?, -h, and -? all don't work; it says the parameter option does not exist.

After my comparison tests : PowerArchiver8.5 has the highest compression ratio, much higher than the CAB MANAGER introduced above
(including its latest 2003 version) (not including CABARC.EXE, which I just downloaded and haven't tried yet)! At the same time, PowerArchiver8.5 supports compressing folders, while CAB MANAGER can only compress files and can't include folders, which is very inconvenient!
