I don't dare agree with some of the views above!
1. BIOS capacity problem:
The BIOS may look like it is 2Mb or 4Mb
But you have to divide that by 8!
Actually 2Mb is only 256k, and 4Mb is only 512k
What can you do with that little space!
2. yys did not really make the BIOS writable as he imagined.
The reason is simple: after his machine restarted, the contents were gone!
But the BIOS retains memory with the power off!
So, that means yys didn't write anything into the BIOS.
3. Actually this 256k is already very full.
There is a lot of data in it,
including one nasty motherboard vendor LOGO,
so how many K can really be used!
What can that even do!

Finally I strongly suggest yys go buy a few issues of
Microcomputer
In a few recent issues there were detailed introductions to BIOS flashing,
and also how to add remote wake-up functionality in the BIOS
by modifying BIOS files.
It was written exceptionally well!
Very much worth a look!

I remember there was some software that could delete unnecessary things in the BIOS, like removing infrared support for desktop machines and so on! You could use it to remove useless stuff! It could also speed up booting! Though the speedup is limited!

I agree with Shen Jie.
There isn't much room to squeeze out of the BIOS, but the risk is great.
Also, BIOSes for different motherboards have very poor compatibility. Even if it succeeds, going from a successful experiment on one motherboard to success on all motherboards would be a very long process. Maybe that process would never end.

Shen Jie, a BIOS expert, are you? Amazing. Flashed a BIOS once, have you? Amazing. For the development of the DOS forum, you felt it necessary to step forward and correct some of the mistaken views above. Great. Amazing.
It's just that there are a lot of things I don't understand, and I'd like to ask the expert about these corrections.

“The BIOS may look like it is 2MB or 4MB
But you have to divide that by 8!
Actually 2MB is only 128k, and 4MB is only 256k
What can you do with that little space!”

Why does 2MB have to be divided by 8?
I've really never seen a BIOS expert who can't even distinguish between the units for bytes and bits. What you call 2MB and 4MB are actually 2Mb and 4Mb. Are B and b the same? That's right, BIOS capacity is indeed calculated in bits, but do you know who the best-known ROM chip maker is? It's SST. The largest chip I know of is 32Mb, which converted into bytes is 4MB. As for whether there are any bigger ones, I don't know.
Also let me correct a small mistake of yours: is 2M divided by 8 equal to 128K? A university student, huh? This is a division mistake that even elementary school students wouldn't make.

You are quite right that I did not successfully write into the ROM, but that is exactly why I made this post so everyone could study it together. Otherwise I would also have posted an announcement like WENGIER: I have officially developed... As for where the 128K I created came from, I don't think it's necessary to tell you now. If you're interested, I suggest you carefully read the website provided in post #8 and the software documentation for ROM-BIN that I provided. You can also use GOOGLE to search for the keyword ROMDISK.

If your FROM has 2Mb (that is, 256KB), and your BIOS uses 128K, then there is still 128KB of space left, and that 128K is enough to hold the DOS622 boot files. But some motherboards have ROMs that are too small, and the BIOS really does use up all the space. Also let me tell you that not all motherboards have a LOGO.

As for the Microcomputer you recommended, if I come across it I will definitely read it. But here I would like to recommend a few classic BIOS websites to you, which I believe are far more valuable than those few articles of yours.
BIOS repair website: http://www.biosrepair.com/
BIOS page: http://61.150.76.248/bios/index.html
There used to be a BIOS Home too, but it has closed.

Don't think that just because you understand a little bit, you understand the whole world, and then act like some top-level expert saying it's necessary to step forward for the development of the DOS forum... as if everyone else were damaging the DOS forum, and your few words could push forward the development of the DOS forum. It's just a pity that the expert's level is too “expert.” I really dare not compliment the level of your corrections. After reading your corrections I really laughed for quite a while (especially compared with that earlier “necessary to step forward”). Having different opinions is a good thing, but being too arrogant is not good. Even if you're stronger than others, that's not how you should talk—let alone when arrogance requires capital. I strongly suggest that in the future, when you correct others, you have sufficient evidence and make fewer low-level mistakes.

The view in post #18 is very fair. Indeed, this method does not have strong general applicability. Some motherboards' ROMs still have a lot of space besides the BIOS, while others have none at all. But I believe future motherboards will definitely develop in this direction.

Going to fight!? Count me in! yiyesong, you too! Wasn't your reply in post #19 pretty arrogant too?! Forget it, the forum is a place for everyone to express opinions. Different opinions are good for our thinking! Though his reply was a bit excessive! From another angle, he was joking around with you! Why be so harsh! Forget it, when there's a chance I'll arrange something and we'll all come have a few drinks! I'm from Harbin! Harbin beer is pretty good!

Sorry!
yiyesong
When I spoke,
my tone and wording
were a bit inappropriate!
Please be magnanimous, yiyesong,
and let your little brother off the hook!
I have already corrected the mistakes above!
Thank you for the reminder, yiyesong!

Ugh...
Why is everyone so hot-tempered..... is there really any need to be like this?? I really don't get it....

Also, can someone tell me how storage units are referred to on the mainland?? I really don't understand what "字节" means...
In Taiwan we say it like this: bit(bit)-->byte(byte)-->kilobyte(KB)-->megabyte(MB)-->gigabyte(GB)-->terabyte(TB)

Taiwan: bit(bit)-->byte(byte)-->
Mainland: bit or 位(bit,b)-->字节(byte,B)-->
Got it now, DD?

DD, on the mainland it's like this:
1 byte (B)=8 bits, 1 word=2 bytes=16 bits, double word=32 bits. One English character takes up 1 byte, while one Chinese character takes up 1 word.
byte (B)-->kilobyte (KB)-->megabyte (MB)-->gigabyte (GB)-->terabyte (TB)

This is for discussing ROMDISK, not unrelated topics. Stop talking about gunpowder and all that. Nothing happened, and you people keep talking like something did. Friends who are not interested in ROMDISK, please do not keep replying. If everyone is interested in gunpowder, please go post in the off-topic section.
I made this post for mutual discussion, mutual study, and progress together, and I firmly support differing opinions. I also hope more friends will offer useful opinions, but what I dislike most is people who don't have much ability yet think they're something great.
I'll say the same thing again: if you dare to talk big and look down on others, you should weigh yourself first. You should make others truly convinced, and not leave them able to catch your mistakes.

The following is quoted from yiyesong's post at 2003-6-29 17:45:14:
DD, on the mainland it's like this:
1 byte (B)=8 bits, 1 word=2 bytes=16 bits, double word=32 bits. One English character takes up 1 byte, while one Chinese character takes up 1 word.
byte (B)-->kilobyte (KB)-->megabyte (MB)-->gigabyte (GB)-->terabyte (TB)

Moderator YYS, thank you, that's a very clear explanation.
Mainland China's 1 word is equivalent to Taiwan's 1 character group.

Not bad, not bad. I actually think that in academic discussion, a little temper now and then is inevitable. To begin with, it isn't really a matter of who is right and who is wrong, because before the final answer comes out, nobody knows who is right and who is wrong. If you've studied something for a long time and someone else kills it off with one blow, anyone would be full of anger, so it's understandable if the wording and tone get a bit heavy. I remember that in the Western Renaissance era, people sometimes even dueled over academic disputes. I hope we don't get that here!
  But from everyone's arguing, I really have learned quite a few things, and that is the most important thing!!
