I agree with Wengier’s point of view. The people who come to the China DOS Union Forum can roughly be divided into three types:
(In the following, ‘dos’ all means pure DOS)
1. Those looking for software resources under DOS. What they care about is whether the DOS software they want is here, or whether they can get guidance here to find what they want.
2. Those hoping to complete tasks with the command line. What they actually want is only for the task to be completed automatically, but because of the innate shortcomings of the DOS command line, there is third-party software and many vbs scripts.
3. Those who ran into problems while using DOS and are looking for solutions. For example, DOS games not running, DOS system installation problems, and so on.
The DOS forum I hope for is like this:
1. It can become a treasury of DOS software. Things that can’t be found elsewhere should all be found here, including DOS games. That would be NB. In addition, I think introductions to some classic software and games should definitely include screenshots.
2. It can serve as an encyclopedia for solving DOS problems. If you get stuck on a DOS problem, you can come here and get it solved.
3. DOS emulators should have dedicated introductions.
4. Batch files are one of DOS’s special features. Though not easy to write, they are easy to learn. Simple, easy to learn, and easy to use has always been Microsoft’s specialty, and undoubtedly also DOS’s specialty. CMD should have a place, but it should not be in the DOS section. As for vbs, I suggest painfully giving it up, because it has so many possible discussion topics that it could have a forum of its own! (This is not alarmist talk. For example: www.visualbasicscript.com. Also, simple and complex are relative. Although vb can be considered “simple” among programming languages, compared with DOS batch files, it should count as quite complex.)
