It is used under pure DOS. I changed 32 to 16, but my ATI graphics card should support 800×600, 32-bit, yet it still can't be used!

Let me explain the environment used again.

It is best to run it under pure DOS with long filename support (I only tested it under MS-DOS 7.10 and it worked fine). As for the driver, actually, nothing needs to be loaded, and even HIMEM.SYS doesn't need to be loaded to run (but it's better to load it). Of course, if you want to hear sound, you need to load the sound card driver. Don't load too many programs, otherwise it may cause conflicts. Also, you should run it using the play "file name" method instead of manually calling the mplayer program. I tested it in VMware and two real computers (2.4GHz and 3.0GHz), and it ran very well.

I run it in the command line of XP and it can be used. I'm playing an RM format TV series, but after maximizing, it can't return to the original appearance. When I bring up the task manager, the window color has changed. I haven't tried it under DOS yet.

Now it can run under DOS and make sound, but the frame rate is very slow when watching videos. I wonder if there is a way to solve this.

This should be related to the computer's system configuration. If the CPU speed is relatively slow, the speed will naturally be relatively slow. It is recommended that the CPU be at least 2GHz. For example, when I ran it on the two computers with CPUs of 2.4GHz and 3.0GHz mentioned above, the frame rate was relatively fast, and I didn't feel "lagging". If the playback speed on an older computer feels too slow, you can add the -hardframedrop parameter to automatically skip some frames (for example: play -hardframedrop test.avi). You can also try loading a cache to further increase the speed.

WinXP seems to sometimes have a bad handling of interruptions for full - screen programs on some computers. It feels like it's a problem with WinXP itself. But actually, you can press the F key at any time to switch between windowed and full - screen modes.

Playing the RVMB file using the command play filename is possible. But there's no sound. And it's really hard to find the Intel sound card driver for this Intel motherboard.

After adding the -hardframedrop parameter, the screen becomes more fragmented and unviewable. How to add cache, how to write CONFIG, thanks

Regarding the sound card driver issue. It is recommended to first check if there are relevant drivers. If not (Intel AC97 sound cards generally fall into this category), unless you replace it with a more compatible sound card (like the SB PCI, SB Live! that I use), otherwise there is currently no good solution. However, there are already people discussing this issue there, and maybe support for these AC97 sound cards will be available soon.

The -hardframedrop parameter skips many frame pages and partial decoding to ensure playback speed. But if the computer is really slow, the effect can't be guaranteed, so it's still recommended to use it on a newer computer.

Better disk cache programs like SMARTDRV, QCACHE, etc. Among them, the latter also supports the UltraDMA function and can be downloaded in the "Drivers" section. SMARTDRV can be loaded directly on the command line, and QCACHE.SYS can be loaded directly in CONFIG.SYS using the DEVICE(HIGH) command.

Mine is the one that belongs to Intel's AC97 sound card. This onboard sound card is also troublesome to replace.

If conditions permit, using a dual sound card is also possible. For example, on my current computer with a 3.0GHz CPU, there are two sound cards, namely the VIA HD Audio integrated sound card and the SB Live! PCI sound card. The former cannot produce sound under DOS (even MPXPLAY can't), but the latter (SB Live!) has no problem under DOS, and it also works well under WinXP and WinXP x64 (you know that SB Live! is the PCI upgrade of the best ISA sound card - SB AWE 64 back then).
