Every Chinese character support system has some compatibility problems, and of course this also has something to do with habit.
My suggestion is to use that UCDOS98 disk and just remove its printing system.
(Of course, even then it's still very large and can't fit on one disk. Sheesh, but if you use
that packing technology from VC, it'd be fine. But I suggest removing VC anyway. After all, people who really use
DOS don't often use file managers, because quickly typing CD ... is already
our pride. If you want to bring a file manager, bring a smaller one, and leave
more space for the Chinese support system. For example, the slimmed-down version of LIST,
after compressing with UPX, is only 24K.
The second reason to remove VC is that DOSKEY's completion function is really very useful, so bringing
such a large file manager really leaves no room for the Chinese support system.)
The XZL system simply cannot run on my 4M machine. The few systems the other moderators mentioned
also do not run well on my machine. These systems (including UCDOS, and RAR
and ACE are all incompatible.)
In fact I also have a Chinese character support system on hand with very high
compatibility. But because it is my father's work,
I can't release it.
As for the suggestion of a CD edition: don't give up on floppies. Even if a CD is used, don't abandon old users.
This is one of Microsoft's secrets of success. You can leave a floppy-boot IMG file and the creation
tools on the CD, so those non-current machines (for example, my Piii450 cannot boot from CD)
can first boot from a floppy, and then call the CD resources.
