| 1. Introduction |
+------------------------+
I spent quite a lot of time making this MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk by myself. It has many very powerful and practical functions. I believe it is much better than similar DOS boot disks on the Internet. A large number of practical functions and features have been added. Especially the comprehensive DOS startup LOGO screen, long file names, large hard disks, large memory, FAT32, NTFS, USB support, etc. I believe it is incomparable with most similar DOS boot disks. Let's introduce it below.
+-----------------------------+
| 2. Main Features |
+-----------------------------+
This MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk has many features. The following lists the top 20 most prominent features:
----------------------------
- DOS Animated Startup Logo
- Multi-configuration startup menu
- Full Long File Name (LFN) support
- Full FAT12/16/32 support
- NTFS Drives support
- USB Drives support
- Large Hard Disk support
- Large Memory support
- Full CD/DVD Drives support
- RAM Drives support
- Chinese support
- Full mouse support
- High free conventional memory
- High stability of system
- Function of system maintenance
- Full support for archives
- Graphics File Manager included
- Able to launch Windows directly
- High compatibility and optimized for general use
- Many useful tools
----------------------------
The following further introduces these 20 features in detail:
1 - DOS Animated Startup Logo
===============================================
It is modified based on the Windows boot screen. It contains the DOS startup logo and the animated scroll bar at the bottom. In this way, DOS also has its own startup LOGO screen!
2 - Multi-configuration startup menu
====================================================
When this MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk starts, there will be four options. The first option is to start in EMM386 mode, the second option is to start in UMBPCI mode, and the third option adds support for NTFS and USB drives. Because EMM386 may not work normally on a very few computers, and the main problem with UMBPCI is that it does not support some motherboards, so the user can choose between EMM386 and UMBPCI when starting. In this way, the user can better use this boot disk to start the computer. The fourth item in the startup menu is used to directly view this help file, and the system will automatically load the Chinese character system to support Chinese display. In addition, the user can also choose whether to automatically load programs such as PC-CACHE and Volkov Commander according to the system prompt when starting.
3 - Full Long File Name (LFN) support
===============================================================
The DOSLFN long file name driver is used, so that this DOS boot disk can fully support and use long file names as soon as it starts, including Chinese long file names, just like in the DOS window of Win9x. Except for the internal commands of DOS, many other DOS programs, such as Volkov Commander 4.99, can now use long file names in pure DOS.
4 - Full FAT12/16/32 support
==========================================================
MS-DOS 7.10 natively provides comprehensive support for FAT12/16/32 partitions, so the boot disk inherits this function. And the above-mentioned long file name driver enables support for VFAT (virtual FAT).
5 - NTFS Drives support
========================================
By using the NTFS driver NTFSDOS, this boot disk can fully support NTFS drives, including long file names on NTFS partitions. When the third option (that is, the second-to-last option) is selected in the startup menu, the system will automatically load the NTFSDOS driver to support NTFS drives. It is also possible to manually load it at the command line, that is, execute NTFSDOS or NTFSDOS /U (/U means to enable Unicode support).
6 - USB Drives support
======================================
When the third option (that is, the second-to-last option) is selected in the startup menu, the system will automatically load USB drivers such as DUSE and Motto Hairu when starting to provide support for USB drives. It supports many USB drives, such as USB hard disks, USB optical drives, USB floppy drives, USB ZIP drives, etc. For some computers, sometimes you can manually set the parameters of the drive to better support your USB drive. Or you can also manually load these drivers at the command line using commands such as CTLOAD and ADDEV, for example, execute CTLOAD DUSE.EXE DRIVES=2.
7 - Large Hard Disk support
========================================
In addition to supporting standard hard disks, it also supports very large hard disks (over 100G), including Int13X extended partitions, etc. Similarly, all the tools provided in this boot disk (such as Free FDISK, etc.) also support large hard disks, so there is no need to worry that this boot disk cannot recognize your large-capacity hard disk.
8 - Large Memory support
=====================================
It supports large memory up to 2GB, and provides XMS and UMB memory to maximize the performance of the computer.
9 - Full CD/DVD Drives support
=============================================
By using the best general optical drive drivers (such as VIDE-CDD.SYS and USBCD.SYS, etc.), it supports various IDE/ATAPI as well as most SCSI/ASPI and even USB optical drives, and it is fast and occupies less memory. The FINDCD program自带 in the boot disk can also display the installed optical drive drive letters and set them to environment variables. For example, FINDCD /S can display and set all current optical drive drive letters.
10 - RAM Drives support
====================================
By using the best memory virtual disk tool XMSDSK, a 4M memory disk is automatically provided, and its size can be arbitrarily modified at the command line through the XMSDSK command.
11 - Chinese support
===============================
The Chinese support of this boot disk is reflected in many aspects. First, the long file name driver DOSLFN uses code page 936 (simplified Chinese) to fully support Chinese long file names; second, it comes with the compact XZL Chinese character system. After starting it, it can fully support the display of Chinese characters (including Chinese long file names) in DOS. At the same time, this instruction file is also in Chinese, so you can directly use commands such as MORE and EDIT at the command line to view its content after starting the Chinese character system, or you can directly select the fourth item in the startup menu when booting to automatically open this file for viewing.
12 - Full mouse support
========================================
By using the best mouse driver CuteMouse 1.9, it supports various serial port and PS/2 mice, etc., and it is very fast and occupies less memory; the universal use of MouseClip program enables the easy use of the mouse in the DOS command line, and it supports copy/paste and the function of simulating direction keys.
13 - High free conventional memory
===================================================
After starting the system with this boot disk, although many practical functions are loaded, the free conventional memory is usually still as high as 625K-630K, and the free UMB memory is usually also tens of K. In this way, when you start it and run any program, there will be no memory shortage prompt, because there is still a large amount of free memory available.
14 - High stability of system
==============================================
This boot disk comes with KILLER and ESCAPE programs, which greatly enhance the stability of the system:
KILLER: It can automatically intercept incorrect specifications in running programs and return to DOS to prevent system instability or crashes;
ESCAPE: It can press the F12 key to return to DOS in any situation to prevent the system from crashing. It can be seen that KILLER and ESCAPE are complementary. The former is proactive by the system, and the latter is proactive by the user to maximize the enhancement of system stability.
15 - Function of system maintenance
==================================================
In addition to the commonly used DOS disk tools such as CHKDSK, FORMAT, FDISK, etc., the boot disk also comes with many practical system maintenance tools such as BOOTPART and SRC Tools.
BOOTPART is a command-line startup partition manager with very powerful functions; SRC Tools can save/restore/check the boot sector/MBR/FAT of the disk to well maintain the system and disk.
16 - Full support for archives
===============================================
The boot disk comes with practical archive extraction tools such as PKUNZIP 2.50, UNARJ, EXTRACT, UNDISK, etc., and most of them support long file names. Therefore, this boot disk supports various common formats of archives and disk images such as ZIP, ARJ, CAB, IMG, etc., which greatly facilitates use.
17 - Graphics File Manager included
========================================================
The boot disk comes with Volkov Commander (VC) file manager, a very powerful, practical and famous file management tool, with a graphical interface operation and fully supports long file names. After the system starts, it will automatically prompt whether to start VC, that is, the following information is displayed:
Press ENTER in 2 seconds if you want to start Volkov Commander..
If you press the Enter key within 2 seconds, VC 4.99 will be automatically started; otherwise, it will not be started automatically, but it can be manually started at the command line with the VC command at any time.
18 - Able to launch Windows directly
==========================================================
This MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk provides the function of directly launching Windows, including versions such as Win3.x and Win9x, and is closely integrated with Windows. The specific method is to enter the WIN command at the DOS command line to start the corresponding version of Windows. (Note: It has been enhanced to cooperate highly with Windows by using the 3xStart program). And as described in the above features, this MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk fully supports functions such as long file names, FAT32 partitions, large hard disks, etc., so there will be no incompatibility with Windows.
Note: If you use a floppy disk to boot this boot disk, please make sure that the floppy disk is in the floppy drive when starting Windows. To enter the Windows 9x interface, first enter the folder where Windows is located, and then run the WIN command.
19 - High compatibility and optimized for general use
========================================================================
This MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk has fully considered the issues of compatibility and universality from the beginning of production, and has carried out various optimized configurations according to this requirement. Therefore, it not only has many powerful and practical functions, but also has very strong compatibility and universality. After starting it, you can run various DOS programs (if any), including Windows installation programs, etc. And through various configurations, as long as the system requirements listed below are met, it should be able to work normally on various different computers.
20 - Many useful tools
=======================================
This boot disk contains many very practical tools, such as UMBPCI, PERUSE, CWSDPMI, PC-CACHE, etc., which can provide functions such as DPMI services, disk buffering, music playback, image viewing, screen display control, etc. For details, please see the following file list and their own instruction files.
