Everybody knows memory is hundreds of times faster than a hard disk, so why not virtualize a sufficiently large virtual hard disk on the hard disk (hard disks nowadays are easily 256M, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem, especially since Win98 can also be slimmed down). Then run Win98 on the virtual hard disk (which is actually in memory). Wouldn't the running speed then be hundreds of times faster than usual???
Idea: A few years ago I used this method to make an ultra-fast Win32 and succeeded. The steps were as follows:
1. Make a boot floppy with Ramdisk and Subst --->2. Edit the boot config files so it can start a sufficiently large virtual hard disk for installing Win32 --->3. Create a new directory on the virtual hard disk, use Subst to redirect it as a floppy disk, and copy the three core system files to this directory in a certain order --->4. Install Win32 onto the virtual hard disk and run it.
As a result, getting from DOS into Win32 took less than 1 second, and all kinds of operations were completed instantly. What impressed me especially was doing disk defragmentation on the virtual disk—it finished with a whoosh in an instant.
If a similar virtual Win98 can be made, the benefits would be as follows:
1. Burn the corresponding boot disc with a CD burner, and use this system to go online. Without connecting a hard disk, you wouldn't have to fear viruses or hackers.
2. Memory manufacturers would be grinning from ear to ear.
Can the same kind of Win2000 be made? Personally I feel it's impossible.
