The original oakcdrom.sys CD-ROM driver in Win98 has many drawbacks under DOS, but it has good compatibility. The VIDE-CDD.SYS recommended by the webmaster works very well in the compatibility mode of Win98 on my machine and loads very fast, but it doesn't work at all when made into a boot disk and run in pure DOS. I don't know why.

Why not?
I'm using it just fine.

Compatible mode is fine,
there won't be a problem in the boot disk.
This can only mean that your boot disk may be problematic!

It is noted that the VIDE-CDD.SYS (6KB) compressed with UPX may be incompatible with CTLOAD, but the VIDE-CDD.SYS (11KB) not compressed with UPX is fully compatible with CTLOAD and others.

Also, what is meant by "Win98 compatibility mode"?

The webmaster came out. The situation is like this: Didn't I post a thread about the CD-ROM drive letter yesterday? Later, the webmaster personally came forward to solve it for me, and I'm very happy. At that time, the webmaster also said that if I replace the CD-ROM drive in my *.bat, oakcdrom.sys file with VIDE-CDD.SYS, the effect will be better. I did as he said. As a result, it runs very well in the DOS window of Win98. But when I added the VIDE-CDD.SYS file and the relevant command statements to the Autoexec.bat of the bootable CD-ROM and burned it into a disc, and tried to use this disc to boot and install Win98, it prompted that my computer didn't have a CD-ROM drive (but I have three CD-ROM drives on my computer)! Later, I put the original file oakcdrom.sys back as it was, burned the disc again and tested, and found that everything was normal! I compared the two batch files and found that the grammar was exactly the same. Then I did other experiments. The result was that adding CTLOAD.exe in front of VIDE-CDD.SYS didn't run normally in the Win98 window, and adding Device.com in front of Oakcdrom.sys would crash in pure DOS! When adding Ctload.com in front of Oakcdrom.sys, it runs normally both in Win98 and pure DOS, but it seems a bit slow. Why?

My computer configuration is: MSI 845E motherboard / Kingston DDR266-512M / Maxtor 60G / 2 BENQ CD-ROM drives and a Lite-On 12x burner. Please help diagnose, thanks.

Actually, the best way is naturally to add a line in CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICEHIGH=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:xxx

It's also okay to load VIDE-CDD.SYS using the DEVICE.COM command. If you want to load VIDE-CDD.SYS using the CTLOAD command, please use the uncompressed VIDE-CDD.SYS file, because CTLOAD does not support compressed formats.

I also tried adding DEVICEHIGH=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:mscd001 in CONFIG.SYS, but it didn't work. Finally, it still prompted that my computer didn't have a CD-ROM drive installed!

Of course, the mscdex driver is installed. That's the very minimum!

According to what Wengier said, the VIDE - CDD.SYS file of about 11K obtained by decompressing apicd214.exe downloaded from the New DOS Era can be used in pure DOS, but it always prompts errors, especially the support for Lite-On burners is not very good. I haven't tried other burners.
