To All:
Recently, I flipped through my middle school notes and accidentally came across this "The Story of Mr. Shi Eating Lions". I found it quite interesting. So I searched for the link to this short article on the Internet. Unexpectedly, I was able to find the sequel and poems, which I feel is a kind of fate. To celebrate this, I am posting the original text, sequel, and poems below, with some minor edits, hoping to share them with everyone!
Below is reprinted from
Wonderful Text Appreciation: Sequel to Zhao Yuanren's "The Story of Mr. Shi Eating Lions" -- Little Fox
Little Fox posted on 2005-10-5 11:22:40
http://www.ft77.com/ftblog/more.asp?name=zaq12wsx&id=234
Original Text:
A scholar from Shishi named Mr. Shi was fond of lions and vowed to eat ten lions. Mr. Shi often went to the market to look for lions. At ten o'clock, ten lions happened to arrive at the market. At this time, Mr. Shi happened to be at the market. Mr. Shi saw these ten lions, relied on his crossbow power, made these ten lions die, Mr. Shi picked up the bodies of these ten lions, went to the stone chamber. The stone chamber was wet, Mr. Shi asked his attendants to wipe the stone chamber. After the stone chamber was wiped, Mr. Shi began to try to eat the bodies of the ten lions. When eating, he began to realize that these ten lion bodies were actually ten stone lion bodies. Try to explain this matter.
Sequel:
The scholar Mr. Shi studied under Mr. Shi from Shishi. This is the history teacher of Mr. Shi. Mr. Shi from Shishi was fond of eating the history of lions, which were actually historical facts of ten generations. When Mr. Shi was eating the bodies of stone lions, Mr. Shi from Shishi happened to be watching. When Mr. Shi from Shishi saw Mr. Shi eating the bodies of stone lions, he showed Mr. Shi's attendants to pick up ten persimmons to wipe the wet stone lion bodies. The attendants saw that when Mr. Shi from Shishi was looking at the stone chamber, he picked up lion droppings to wipe the wet stone lion bodies. When the bodies of the stone lions were wet, Mr. Shi from Shishi began to try to eat. When eating, Mr. Shi from Shishi began to see that the wet stone lion bodies were actually bodies of stone lions made of droppings. This matter caused Mr. Shi from Shishi to lose things when wiping the droppings. At exactly ten o'clock, Mr. Shi from Shishi passed away. When Mr. Shi picked up the body of Mr. Shi from Shishi, he began to realize that Mr. Shi from Shishi was a teacher of droppings. Mr. Shi asked his attendants to pick up the body of Mr. Shi from Shishi made of droppings and go to the stone chamber. At this time, Mr. Shi began to vow to serve the teacher of droppings from Shishi at the stone chamber for generations. This matter made Mr. Shi begin to realize that the historical fact of eating lions was the history of Mr. Shi from Shishi eating ten stone droppings lion bodies.
Test Poem:
The stone teacher was originally the stone lion master, fond of eating lion bodies for ten generations.
The scholar Mr. Shi studied under Mr. Shi from Shishi, seeing that the stone was actually the teacher of eating lions.
The attendants picked up droppings to wipe the lions, and Mr. Shi was actually losing his sight.
Mr. Shi vowed to serve the teacher to Mr. Shi from Shishi, and it was at the time of Mr. Shi from Shishi's death.
Mr. Shi from Shishi tried to eat the matter of droppings lions, and dying when eating was a fact.
This matter made Mr. Shi begin to vow, and began to realize that the stone teacher was the teacher of droppings.
The stone teacher's ten generations of eating lion history were actually the history of Mr. Shi from Shishi eating droppings.

Zhao Yuanren himself is an extraordinary person. It is said that he can speak all the dialects in China.
When this article was written at that time, Zhao Yuanren was to illustrate the shortcomings of the national language (now called Putonghua), that there are too many homophones and only four tones are distinguished. If this article is read in many southern dialects, it can be found that these words are not homophones in the dialects, so that the meaning can be distinguished more effectively.

Re fujianabc:

Re: fujianabc:
After reading your profile and confirming it through online searches, I realized that Zhao Yuanren is not a historical figure but a contemporary person, and I feel ashamed for my assumption. So I quietly changed the subject title from "Yuan·Zhao Yuanren" to "Zhao Yuanren".
Now, when I re-examine my note, there is indeed no mention of the author's era, but it does mention the source of reprinting—Lu Baoyuan's *Chinese and Chinese Culture*, although it is also a reprint from elsewhere.
Author Introduction:
Zhao Yuanren (1892-1982), a renowned linguist, philosopher, and composer. Respected as the "Father of Chinese Linguistics" in the Chinese linguistic community. His courtesy name was Xuanzhong, he was from Wujin, Jiangsu, born in Tianjin. In 1910, he was the second batch of students for the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Study Abroad Program, entered Cornell University in the United States, majoring in mathematics, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1914. In 1918, he obtained a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University. In 1919, he served as a physics lecturer at Cornell University. In 1920, he returned to China to serve as a professor of psychology and physics at Tsinghua School. In 1921, he again studied phonetics at Harvard University, and then served as a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and a professor in the Department of Chinese at Harvard University. In June 1925, he was invited to serve as a tutor at the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Studies, with the scope of guidance including "Modern Dialectology", "Chinese Phonology", "General Linguistics", etc. After the end of the Academy of Chinese Studies at the end of June 1929, he was appointed by the Academia Sinica as a researcher in the Institute of History and Philology and the director of the Language Group, and simultaneously served as a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Literature at Tsinghua University, teaching courses such as "Phonology". His main works include *New Rhyme of National Language*, *Study of Modern Wu Chinese*, *Phonetic Transcription of Guangxi Yao Songs*, *Introduction to Cantonese* (English edition), *Aspects of Chinese Society and Language* (English edition), *Grammar of Chinese*, *Readings in Chinese*, *Problems of Language*, *General Writing Scheme*, and *Selected Linguistic Papers of Zhao Yuanren* has been published. He taught in the United States starting from 1938.

Correct a mistake. It's not "Jiangsu Wujin people", but Wujin, which now belongs to Changzhou City.
Haha, Wu and Wu are another pair of homophones. Originally, they were not homophonic, but confused in Putonghua.

I remember there is also a good article titled <<Record of the Hungry Chickens Gathering at the Machine>>. It says the story of "Several extremely hungry chickens gathering at a machine, using the machine's rapid speed to arouse crucian carps in the river to eat". The specific original text is forgotten.

Zhao Yuanren is from Changzhou, which I know. Changzhou has a Wujin, and that's certain.
I looked up the administrative divisions of Changzhou. The formal writing is only Wujin, not "Wujin" (五进). It has been like this since ancient times. But searching for "Changzhou Wujin" and "Changzhou 五进" both yields a bunch of results, and there are many duplicates. Maybe "五进" is a colloquial way of writing it.

The Story of Hungry Chickens Gathering on a Machine
Cheep, cheep, chicken cheeps.
Several chickens crowd and gather on the machine's back.
The machine is extremely fast, the chicken is extremely hungry,
The chicken hopes its skills can attack and reach the crucian carp.
The machine has already reached Ji and Ji,
The chicken plans to use the machine to stimulate several crucian carps.
The machine is extremely fast, the crucian carp is extremely tired,
Hastily crowd and gather on the rock level and edge.
Then the crucian carp's trace is extremely silent.
Then several chickens are already hungry and then cheep cheep.
