......I think it should be impossible to install MS-DOS 7.1 under NTFS... MS-DOS cannot recognize the NTFS format without loading a plugin that supports NTFS.

It is impossible to directly install pure DOS under the NTFS partition. However, the method of booting to pure DOS using a virtual floppy drive (such as GRUB for NTLDR, etc.) can also be used. But please note the difference between installing DOS and booting to DOS using a virtual floppy drive.

I used vfloppy, booted to DOS, and added a Ghost tool in it, which can be used, and I also think it's very convenient. But I heard that this software will have problems and cannot be used normally after defragmenting.

I used to partition the hard disk into one primary partition + one extended partition. Once I was determined to set the primary partition, which is C:, to NTFS format. The problem arose that when installing FreeBSD on the second hard disk, it insisted on writing to the primary partition of the first hard disk.

So my C: has been in FAT32 format all the time, and the Windows system partition is on J:. I don't like installing (programs) on C: or D:. Checking the system log often sees scans of these two partitions on the network. I've never installed DOS system on the hard disk; DOS systems are all loaded through vfloppy or grub for dos. Other DOS programs are placed on the FAT32 partition of the hard disk. Now the CD-ROM is broken, and the floppy drive is also removed. As for NTFS for DOS, it's better not to use it; there are a lot of problems.

Since the restored system can boot into XP, and just the image loaded by vfloppy is broken, then run vfloppy again. If you insist on using NTFS format, then you can find a WinPE boot CD on the Internet, or you can maintain it through the network.
